Frequently Asked Questions

We understandably receive a number of Frequently Asked Questions and we have compiled a list of the answers to these below.

Becoming a dental nurse requires a combination of education, training and practical experience. Here are the steps you need to take to become a dental nurse:

1. Complete a dental nursing diploma course: This is the first step to becoming a dental nurse because the National Diploma is accredited by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) and recognised by other relevant professional bodies such as the General Dental Council (GDC) in the UK and provides the necessary qualification for registration and entry into a dental nursing career.

2. Gain practical experience: The dental nursing diploma requires practical training in a dental practice where you will complete a Record of Experience (RoE) portfolio which is an essential part of the course. You can do this by working at a dental practice as a trainee dental nurse. You will be given assistance, if necessary, in finding suitable employment while studying as a trainee.

3. Register with the relevant professional body: In the UK, dental nurses must register with the General Dental Council (GDC) before they can practice as a professional. You need to do this after gaining the National Diploma and meeting the GDC’s requirements for fitness to practise.

Given that this course requires paid employment, the tuition fees can be covered by the salary you earn while undergoing the programme. Furthermore, a considerable number of dental practices offer financial support to students. To ease the burden of payment, an instalment scheme is available with payment options. As a result, students can meet the requirements of the course without incurring student debt.

Payment plan:

The overall cost of the course is £1490, not including the registration and NEBDN examination fees. Payment can be made through several instalments as follows:

An initial course fee of £290 is due at the time of enrolment.

There are eight monthly instalments of £150 each, with the first instalment being paid in the second month after the start of the course.

An NEBDN Examination fee of £525 is due when you apply for your electronic Record of Experience (eRoE) after starting work as a paid trainee dental nurse.

The course offers theoretical training that can be accessed either online via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) or through traditional face-to-face classes, which are typically held fortnightly at our Acton centre.

There are no formal entry qualifications but students are expected to be sufficiently fluent in written and spoken English to communicate effectively with patients, their relatives, the dental team and other healthcare professionals in the UK. .

The Diploma in Dental Nursing assessment and exam format consists of three components.

1. Record or Experience (RoE): The RoE is a portfolio that serves as a written and authenticated record of the student’s competence in various dental procedures gained while working as a trainee in a dental practice. Students will receive guidance from their tutor on how to compile the RoE. This must be completed before proceeding to written and practical examinations.

2. Written examination: This is a computer-based multiple-choice exam that covers theoretical knowledge of dental nursing. The exam is held online via video application.

3. Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): This is a practical assessment that tests the candidate’s ability to apply their knowledge in a clinical setting. The exam consists of a series of stations where the candidate is assessed on various aspects of dental nursing, such as patient care, communication and infection control.

Upon successful completion of the course and exams, candidates will be awarded the National Diploma in Dental Nursing and will be eligible to register with the GDC as a dental nurse.
