Witness Mentorship Programme

An essential component of training for students pursuing the NEBDN National Diploma course is their Record of Experience (RoE), which tracks the progress of their practical experience as trainees. Your assistance is important in order to enable them to complete this record.

Each student requires a witness or mentor who will observe them during a procedure and provide feedback. Multiple witnesses are permitted, provided they are GDC registered. This could be a senior nurse, therapist, or for you to personally mentor the student.  The witness allocation can be tailored to suit the needs of your practice.

Once witnesses are assigned, they should familiarise themselves with the relevant information that specifies their role in supporting the trainee

Witnesses must observe the student while undertaking procedures in order to assess the extent to which they are ‘competent’ or ‘not competent’ as defined in the NEBDN guidance. They are required to evaluate whether the student adheres to guidelines correctly or if they make errors. Feedback should include the four elements specified below:

  • Identify what the student did well during the procedure.
  • Note areas where the student did not perform adequately.
  • Suggest any areas identified for improvement.
  • Provide any general constructive feedback as needed.
