What is the NEBDN Professional Discussion?
If you’re on the journey to becoming a dental nurse, you’ve likely come across the term NEBDN — the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses. This organisation plays a vital role in dental nurse training, offering a recognised route to professional qualification in the UK. The NEBDN Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing is assessed through three components, and the final one is the NEBDN Professional Discussion.
The three components, each graded pass or fail, are:
- Portfolio of Evidence (PoE): a digital portfolio you build over at least six months while working as a trainee in a dental practice.
- Knowledge Test: an online multiple-choice exam of 65 questions in 90 minutes, set and marked by NEBDN.
- Professional Discussion (PD): the final assessment.
So what exactly is the PD, and why is it so important?
Understanding the NEBDN Professional Discussion
PD stands for Professional Discussion. It is an online assessment with an NEBDN examiner, lasting 60 minutes plus 10 minutes’ reading time.
The PD is not a practical exam. You won’t perform clinical tasks or rotate through stations. Instead, you talk the examiner through what you know and what you have done. Your answers draw on the knowledge you’ve gained and the work you’ve completed in your dental practice, based on the nine duties of the dental nurse.
The Knowledge Test checks your theoretical understanding. The PD explores how you apply that understanding in real situations: why you work the way you do, how you keep patients safe, and how you act professionally as part of the dental team.
How Does the PD Fit with the Other Assessments?
The three components build on each other:
- Portfolio of Evidence: records your competence through evidence such as witness testimonies, assessor observations, examples of your work and personal statements. Your training provider assesses it.
- Knowledge Test: covers the theory of dental nursing. You must pass it before you can sit the PD.
- Professional Discussion: brings it all together. Because it is based on your workplace experience, a well-built portfolio is your best preparation.
You must complete your Portfolio of Evidence and pass the Knowledge Test before you take the Professional Discussion. You must pass all three components to achieve the qualification and apply for registration with the General Dental Council.
How to Prepare for the Professional Discussion
Success in the PD comes from understanding your own practice and being able to explain it clearly. Here are a few preparation tips:
- Know your portfolio: re-read your Portfolio of Evidence and be ready to talk about the examples in it.
- Explain the “why”, not just the “what”: practise describing why each procedure is done the way it is, from infection control to patient care and record keeping.
- Use real examples: think of specific situations from your practice that show your knowledge and professional judgement.
- Take part in mock PDs: practising with a tutor helps you get used to answering questions out loud and builds confidence.
- Ask for feedback: tutors and qualified colleagues can point out gaps in your explanations.
- Prepare for an online assessment: check your device, internet connection and a quiet space in advance, and read NEBDN’s candidate guidance for the rules that apply on the day.
