About this qualification
The Certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application is equivalent to a Level 4 qualification awarded by the National Examination Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN).This provides established dental nurses with additional training which will enable them to provide effective fluoride varnish application within a community-based setting, on prescription from a dentist or as part of a structured dental health programme.
Learner Eligibility:
- Dental Nurse, Dental Hygienist or Therapist
- GDC Registration
- 6 months post registration experience
- Up to date CPD and PDP
- Clinical Supervisor
- Adequate patient access for ROC completion
Course duration:
- 6 weeks Online Learning (Approximately 5 hrs per week)
- End of Course Assessment
- 3 month Record of Competence (RoC) completion.
How is the course delivered online?
Similar to the classroom activities that your tutor designs to develop and support learning, we have included guided learning tasks to increase our students’ understanding and knowledge.
The online learning experience provided by The School of Dental Nursing includes a combination of materials and learning resources to guide and support students as independent online learners. These include:
- Video lessons
- Exclusive, unique animations
- Suggested reading materials
- Key documents
- Guided learning tasks
- Progress assessments
All these learning resources are available for our students to study at the times that best suits them as supported independent learners. There are no set lesson times to log in, meaning that they can plan their study around their individual circumstances and existing commitments.
In order to provide additional support, we also provide online forums where learners can talk to teaching staff and other students. Each student is also assigned a personal tutor to give support throughout their work for the Record of Competence.
How to Study the Course
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of students Fluoride Varnish which will allow them to succeed in the exam. The course takes place over six weeks of guided learning requiring approximately 6 hours of study per week, followed by completion of a Record of Competence. Students can study at their own pace and take longer if they need to do so but it normally takes about six weeks to complete the initial learning.
Each week is accompanied by a study guide, which is designed to help students navigate their learning. As they read through the guide they watch online videos and carry out a variety of guided learning tasks.
Record of Competence
To achieve a certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application students are required to complete a work-based Record of Competence (RoC). There are two sections to the RoC:
1- Practical Competence Assessment Sheets (PCAS)
2- Supplementary outcomes.
Examination
There is no examination required for this qualification.
Award of qualification
In order to be awarded this qualification, students must:
Complete and satisfy the requirements of the RoC
Additional Learning Needs
As this is an online course the learner can readily adapt materials to support individual additional learning needs. A common recommendation is the use of a computer. The School also provides additional time for assessment, transcripts and PDFs of all video materials as well as pastoral advice.
