What is it?

A new respiratory illness that affects our lungs and airways

It is caused by virus called CORONAVIRUS

It was first identified in Wuhan city, China in December 2019 and has since spread rapidly across the world

What are the symptoms?

A new persistent dry cough

Shortage of breath-difficulty in breathing

Fever-a high temperature

It can cause more severe symptoms in those with underlying health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease)

How do we protect ourselves?

Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water or carefully apply hand sanitiser

Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and dispose of the tissue carefully in a designated receptacle

Avoid large gatherings.

Stay at home for 7 days if you have a high temperature or a new, continuous dry cough

It is most likely to spread to others within the first 3 days of an individual having symptoms

After 7 days most people are no longer infectious.

Can COVID-19 be transmitted in areas with hot and humid climates?

Yes, from the evidence so far, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, regardless of climate including areas with hot and humid weather.

Can eating garlic or similar spice/herbs help prevent infection with the new coronavirus?

Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties. However, there is no evidence at all from the current outbreak that eating garlic or similar spice/herbs has protected people from the new coronavirus.

Does drinking alcohol help prevent infection with the new coronavirus?

No. There is no evidence that drinking alcohol can prevent infection by coronavirus.

Is there a vaccine for this virus/disease?

No, so far there is no vaccine but scientists are working towards this and expect to test a vaccine at the end of 2020 in human subjects.
